Use memory and skills to personalize Vinci

Vinci learns about you in two ways: memory (facts it knows) and skills (instructions you teach it).

Memory: what Vinci remembers

Memories are durable facts that Vinci keeps in mind for future chats. You can:

Tell Vinci to remember: in any chat, write "Remember that I prefer short answers" or "Remember my name is Alex."
Let Vinci ask: when Vinci notices something durable, it offers to save it. Tap Undo on the "Remembered: …" note if you would rather it did not.
See what it has learned: open Settings → Personalization → Memory to view the full list.
Edit or delete: tap any memory to change or remove it.

On the web, your memories are saved to your account whenever you are signed in, so they are there the next time you open Vinci in a browser.

The web app and the mobile app keep separate sets of memories. A memory you save on the web does not appear on your phone, and one you save on your phone does not appear on the web, so it is worth telling each the things it needs to know.

Skills: reusable instructions

Skills are standing instructions you write once and Vinci follows in every conversation. Examples include:

"Always show Python examples in your code snippets."
"Answer in French unless I ask otherwise."
"When I ask for a list, format it as a numbered list with brief descriptions."

Skills you write on the web and on your phone are saved to your Vinci account, whether or not device sync is on, so the two apps show one shared list. Create a skill on your laptop and it is waiting on your phone; edit or delete it in either place and the change follows you.

Create a skill

On the web:

Open Settings → Personalization → Skills.
Click Create skill.
Write a clear instruction and save it.

On your phone:

Tap Settings → Skills.
Tap the plus icon.
Type your instruction and save it.

You can view, edit, or delete skills in the same place on either app. Vinci applies every enabled skill to your chats automatically, and each skill has a toggle, so you can switch one off for a while without losing it. Alongside the skills you write, you will find a few built-in skills you can enable or leave off.

If you keep a skill as a file, use Import to bring it in and Export to save a copy out.

Skills on desktop and in Vinci Code

Vinci Work (desktop) and Vinci Code have skills too, and they work differently: they belong to a folder on your computer rather than to your account.

In Vinci Work, a skill lives with the workspace folder you added it to and applies while you work in that folder.
Vinci Code reads its skills the same way, from files on your computer.
Because these skills are not part of your account, they do not appear under Settings → Personalization → Skills on the web or in the mobile app — and the skills you write there do not appear on desktop.

So if you use both, expect two lists: one that follows your account across web and phone, and one that stays with each folder on your computer. To use the same standing instruction in both, add it in both places.

Custom instructions

After a few conversations, you will notice the small preferences you repeat: “Keep it short,” “Avoid jargon,” or “Show me an example.” Custom instructions let you say those things once and carry them into every chat.

Choose one preference to start

Custom instructions are a web feature, and they stay in the browser where you set them: they are not sent to our servers, and they do not carry to another browser, another device, or the mobile app.

On the web, open Account and find custom instructions. Begin with a single instruction that would improve most of your conversations. For example:

“Answer in French.”
“I’m a beginner, so explain technical terms plainly.”
“When code would help, include an example.”
“Lead with a short answer, then add detail.”

Save the instruction, return to chat, and try a familiar question. You’ll see Vinci apply that standing guidance without needing a reminder in your message.

Add context that stays useful

The best custom instructions are durable and specific. Tell Vinci about the audience you usually write for, the level of detail you prefer, or the format you use most often. A useful instruction might be, “When I ask for a project update, give me a three-bullet summary for a non-technical team.”

You can change your instructions anytime, so treat this as a first draft. After a day or two, remove anything that feels too broad and sharpen what remains.

Custom instructions shape how Vinci responds; they do not replace its core character. Vinci’s consistent voice and principles are applied on every message, with your preferences layered on top. The result should feel less like setting up software and more like teaching a thoughtful collaborator how you like to work.

Privacy

Memories are visible only to you and never appear in log files.
Skills are your personal instructions and are never shared with other users.
On the web, memories are saved to your account while you are signed in; the mobile app keeps its own separate set.
Skills you write on the web or your phone are saved to your account; skills you add in Vinci Work or Vinci Code stay on your computer.
Custom instructions stay in the browser where you set them and never reach our servers.
Memories are never used to train Vinci.
